PT SMI and WWF-Indonesia Collaborate to Strengthen the Integration of Natural Aspects into Business Practices

Friday, August 15, 2025 - PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (Persero) (PT SMI) and WWF-Indonesia officially signed a memorandum of understanding, marking the beginning of a strategic collaboration to promote the integration of natural aspects into sustainability practices and business governance. The agreement was signed by PT SMI President Director Reynaldi Hermansjah and WWF-Indonesia CEO Aditya Bayunanda, and witnessed by Joko Siswanto, Head of the Sustainable Finance Directorate of the Financial Services Authority (OJK). The signing ceremony took place at PT SMI's office in the Sahid Sudirman Center Building, Jakarta, on Friday, August 15, 2025.

The agreement between PT SMI and WWF-Indonesia is based on the significant dependence of economic activity on nature. A World Economic Forum report states that more than 50% of global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), equivalent to US$44 trillion, is highly dependent on ecosystem services. Therefore, environmental degradation poses a serious threat to business, investment, and social stability.

"As a Development Finance Institution (DFI), PT SMI recognizes the dependence and impact of our activities on nature. This collaboration is crucial to help us better understand, plan, and implement business practices that positively contribute to nature and sustainable development in Indonesia," said Reynaldi Hermansjah, President Director of PT SMI.

As part of this collaboration, PT SMI and WWF-Indonesia will also collaborate on capacity building, technical assistance, the development and distribution of communication materials to support financial regulators in establishing a regulatory ecosystem that integrates nature aspects, as well as exploring other potential synergies to support sustainable infrastructure projects in Indonesia. In this context, integrating nature aspects into Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies and practices is a crucial step to strengthen the resilience of businesses and financial systems. One example is the implementation of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework in sustainability reports.

Globally, the TNFD has been developed as a reporting framework that encourages companies and financial institutions to identify and disclose their dependence on and impacts on nature, including the risks and opportunities they pose. This collaboration makes PT SMI the first financial institution to pilot the TNFD in Indonesia, demonstrating a strong commitment to pioneering the implementation of nature-related reporting standards in the development finance sector.

"For the past three years, WWF-Indonesia has also continuously collaborated with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to provide training on integrating climate aspects to all banking sectors in Indonesia. This collaboration with PT SMI represents a major step in WWF-Indonesia's commitment to supporting the transformation of financial institutions to pay greater attention to environmental aspects. Through the piloting of TNFD reporting under this collaboration, it is hoped that the impact of infrastructure development on biodiversity can be mitigated and the adoption of TNFD in Indonesia, particularly in the financial sector, can be encouraged," said Aditya Bayunanda, CEO of WWF-Indonesia.

This step is also in line with national regulations that are being gradually implemented in the financial services sector, issuers, and public companies. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has determined that PT SMI will be one of the institutions required to adopt International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) S1 and S2, which include a general framework for disclosing sustainability-related risks and opportunities (ESG) starting in 2028. Furthermore, this represents a concrete action by PT SMI as a member of the Indonesian Sustainable Finance Initiative (IKBI), which prioritizes best practices in the implementation of sustainable finance.

"This pilot initiative for a nature-related reporting framework is an excellent way to assess the feasibility and readiness of the financial industry in the field, particularly to test the implementation of the Sustainability Disclosure Standards (SPK) 1 framework recently launched by the Sustainability Standards Board (DSK) of the Indonesian Institute of Accountants (IAI). The OJK hopes that this learning can provide input to both regulators and entities planning to implement it," concluded Joko Siswanto, Head of the Sustainable Finance Directorate, OJK.

Currently, the TNFD has been adopted by more than 500 companies and financial institutions worldwide. Thus, implementing the TNFD framework is a crucial strategy for PT SMI to prepare for advanced reporting standards, strengthen investor confidence, open up new funding opportunities, and support national economic resilience.
