This reforestation program is one of PT SMI's efforts to compensate for carbon emissions generated from the Company's business and operations. “Today, we witness together how our real actions in helping reduce carbon emissions. If media friends remember, on the anniversary of PT SMI last year, in front of the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Sri Mulyani Indrawati, we emphasized our commitment to sustainability by declaring to become a carbon neutral company in 2028. This step is one of the agendas in the roadmap that we have prepared, to become a carbon neutral company, as well as our support to help achieve the Government's zero carbon target in 2060 or sooner. We hope that collaboration like this can be expanded together with various other parties, so that we can work together to overcome the climate crisis," said President Director of PT SMI, Reynaldi Hermansjah.
Head of the West Java Forestry Agency, Dodit Ardian Pancapana appreciated PT SMI's initiative in organizing the reforestation program. "On behalf of the West Java Provincial Government, I would like to thank PT SMI, which has designed and implemented this reforestation program. This program is in line with the main focus of the West Java Forestry Service to rehabilitate priority lands in several of our areas. Of course, this program will also help empower the surrounding community, so that welfare will also increase," said Dodit.
The surrounding community or local farmer groups are indeed involved so that they know, understand, and actively participate in reducing carbon emissions through tree planting, as well as providing economic benefits from the results of the planted trees. The planting activity of 27 thousand tree seedlings will be carried out using an agroforestry approach. The types of trees planted include damar, lime, avocado, suren, cloves, and coffee.
This critical land planting program in West Java is projected to absorb 308.28 tons of CO2/year of carbon or a projection of 1,849.68 tons of CO2 until 2028. The real calculation of carbon absorption from this reforestation program will be carried out by PT SMI by appointing an implementing consultant after the reforestation activity is carried out.
In addition to planting critical land, PT SMI is also actively contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) through a series of TJSL programs. There are 8 sectors of distribution of PT SMI's TJSL program, namely: natural disasters, development of public infrastructure and/or facilities, places of worship, social communities in the context of poverty alleviation, education and/or training, nature conservation, health improvement, poverty alleviation.
